Aged Driver Assessments

The Program

Older Aged Driver Assessments with OT Occupational Therapist

As we age, it is important to ensure that we are still capable of driving safely on the road. To promote road safety for both you and other drivers, practical on-road examinations for older drivers and riders are intended to evaluate your driving or riding skills.

To keep your licence after a particular age, you must take a driving exam. Depending on the level of your licence, you require a driving test assessment when you are above 70, 75, or 85. This includes details about the necessary medical conditions.

Safe2Go Driving Program

Older Age Driving Test

An older driving test is required if your doctor or another medical professional suggests it for your Multi Combination (MC) vehicle licence at any age. Every two years starting at age 85 for your unrestricted car (class C) and/or rider (class R) licence, every year starting at age 80 for your heavy vehicle licence (Light Rigid (LR), Medium Rigid (MR), Heavy Rigid (HR), or Heavy Combination (HC) licence. You must schedule an evaluation before your birthday. If that’s not possible, get in touch with Service NSW RMS. You might not need to take an older driver’s or rider’s exam if you choose a modified licence. During the practical older driver or rider test for the unrestricted car (class C) and rider (class R) licence classes, you will be examined in the following ways. You need to possess sound knowledge of driving laws, good judgement, and the ability to handle your car. The car you use for the test needs to be licensed, drivable, and registered (roadworthy). If the exam is for a licence to drive or ride an automatic, the car must have an automatic transmission. You must pass a test utilising a foot-operated clutch if you want to ride or drive a manual vehicle. Typically, the exam lasts between 30 – 45 minutes. During the evaluation, your OT driving assessor will instruct you where to drive. Your on-road driver assessment result is based on the way you drive and exhibit safe driving practices in a variety of settings. To prepare for the older driver assessment, you can test your knowledge and refresh your road rules knowledge by reading the relevant handbook. Refresher driving lessons are another option that you might arrange with your assessor. The amount of tests you can take during the time period is unrestricted. However, each time costs money. Ask your assessor about the fees associated with the training and assessment. In summary, older driver assessments are important for ensuring the safety of all drivers on the road. It is essential to be aware of the age requirements and necessary medical conditions to keep your licence. Refreshing your knowledge and skills with the relevant handbook and refresher driving lessons will help you prepare for the older driver assessment.
